Greens federal and state MPs join with unions and steel industry campaigners in call for national steel procurement

With the vote expected in the Upper House this week on the NSW Steel Procurement Bill, it is time all parliaments, State and Federal around the country enacted steel procurement policies. It is not enough to see one-off site specific rescue packages. 

The surest, simplest and most responsible action for every government in the country to take to protect Australian steel and the thousands of manufacturing jobs that depend on it, is to make sure that wherever practical our tax dollars are spent on Australian steel made by Australian workers.

Carol Vernon remains as Cowper candidate - strong campaign continues

NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon has wished her dear friend and Greens candidate for Cowper Carol Vernon a speedy recovery to good health.

Greens set out five steps to republic by 2020

Greens Leader Richard Di Natale is marking the Queen's Birthday by setting out a 5-step path to allowing Australians to serve as our own heads of state.

"We are a mature, independent, confident nation and it's time to stand on our own two feet " Senator Di Natale said.

"It's on days like today that many Australians remember the failed republic referendum of 1999. The Greens have a clear plan to ensure history doesn't repeat itself.

Statement on the tragic shootings in Florida

I am devastated to hear of the horrific news of another violent and senseless shooting in the United States.

Our hearts are with the people of Florida and the LGBTI community.

I extend my deepest condolences for the families and loved ones of those tragically killed or injured.

Labor savings take the axe to education, research and family benefits

Australian Greens Leader Senator Richard Di Natale and Greens Treasury Spokesperson Adam Bandt MP expressed strong disappointment at the savings measures announced today by the Labor party.

 

“We are hearing a lot about zombie measures in the budget, well today the Labor party are resurrecting the zombie of Tony Abbott by refusing to join with the Greens and the community in saying no to harsh cuts for students, families and research,” Senator Richard Di Natale said.

Williamtown contamination crisis - role for NSW EPA to prosecute and drive clean up

At a meeting with Williamtown residents today Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon and Greens Paterson candidate John Brown called for the Red Zone to be redrawn in light of new international contamination standards and for the NSW Environment Protection Authority to investigate and prosecute the environmental crimes occurring at the Williamtown RAAF Base.

"The Greens are committed to working with the Williamtown community to create world class standards in dealing with the contamination crisis and assisting them to rebuild their lives," Senator Rhiannon.

Greens will preference Labor in inner-Melbourne seats

Greens MP Adam Bandt today confirmed that the Greens will preference Labor second in the fiver inner-city Melbourne seats of Melbourne, Batman, Wills, Higgins and Melbourne Ports.

“The Greens have made it very clear that we will not be preferencing the Liberals anywhere, yet Labor is on the verge of striking a preference deal with the Liberals,” Mr Bandt said.

“Labor would preference the Liberals ahead of Nick Xenophon candidates in some South Australian seats in return for the Liberals preferencing Labor ahead of the Greens in seats like Batman and Grayndler.”

Fight for final SA Senate seat heats up

Greens Senator for SA Robert Simms has challenged conservative Family First Senator Bob Day to a debate ahead of the July 2 election following the launch of the website www.robnotbob.com.

"The final senate seat in South Australia is likely to come down to myself or Bob Day, and the choice couldn't be starker. The climate change denying, homophobia of the Family First party versus the progressive, forward-looking agenda of the Greens," Senator Simms said.

RAAF contamination - compensation needed as well as blood tests

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon has commented on Labor’s announcement of their party’s policy on PFOS and PFOA contamination.

“While it is good news that Labor has reversed its previous position and have agreed to fund voluntary blood tests for residents affected by the toxic contamination from RAAF sites, they should also offer compensation.
