Greens call on Illawarra Labor MPs to publicly back govt procurement of Aust steel

The Greens are calling on Illawarra Labor MPs to give their full public support to the growing campaign for federal and state governments to back government procurement of Australian-made steel.

Greens Cunningham candidate Cath Blakey said, "Requiring government procurement is a survival plan for our steel industry that all progressive MPs and candidates should support.

"This issue is critical to future jobs growth and the local economy in the Illawarra.

"Labor MPs are under the spotlight on the future of steel jobs.

Shorten must rule out Labor-Liberal preference deal

Greens MP Adam Bandt has called on Bill Shorten to rule out preferencing the Liberals ahead of the Greens at the upcoming election.

Mr Bandt said the Labor leader must overrule Labor MP Michael Danby, who told Sky News today that he will preference the Liberals in his seat of Melbourne Ports and has called on Labor to preference the Liberals ahead of the Greens in all seats.

“Labor voters would be appalled to know that Labor preferences are going to the Liberals ahead of the Greens,” Mr Bandt said.

Malabar Headland – Veolia dumping highlights growing concern that federal handover weakens protection

The Greens have warned that when the Turnbull government finally handed over Malabar Headland to NSW in February and it was declared a national park, the Environment Minister Greg Hunt failed to lock in full protection for the site.

Greens candidate for Kingsford Smith James Macdonald and Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, a resident of the Eastern Suburbs, are working together to ensure full public access and to stop the dumping of polluting materials.

Turnbull Visit: Greens Step Up Pressure for Rail Alternative

Greens opposing the proposed Western Sydney Airport were part of the vocal group of protesters that greeted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the Glenbrook Panthers Bowling Club on Wednesday.

100 days after the Williamtown inquiry – no remediation, no compensation

It has been 100 days since a Senate inquiry into toxic contamination from the RAAF base at Williamtown, which has leached offsite and is severely affecting residents. Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon, who initiated the inquiry, and Greens candidate for Paterson John Brown have commented on the Turnbull Government’s inaction on this issue. 

“The public inquiry was held 100 days ago today. Williamtown residents have heard nothing from the Turnbull Government, nothing from the Defence Department or Minister Payne.

Justice for Williamtown residents – key Greens election demand

The Greens have committed to making full and fair compensation for Williamtown residents impacted by chemical contamination from the RAAF Base a key plank of their federal election campaign.

Turnbull desperate to distract from chaotic and divided government

The Australian Greens say Malcolm Turnbull is using the ABCC as an excuse to dissolve Parliament and distract from his divided government.

“In my short time in parliament I’ve seen a political system rife with chaos and division, with 5 Prime Ministers in 5 years. Malcolm Turnbull promised an end to that but he is actually presiding over an even more chaotic and divided government than his predecessor,” said Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.
