Greens encourage MPs to tune in as Kimberley dino footprints come to prime time

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert urges all state and federal MPs should watch tonight’s episode of Catalyst on ABC to better understand the importance of the dinosaur track ways under threat by development at James Price Point.

“I encourage Premier Barnett and his Cabinet colleagues to spend some time in front of the TV tonight and see what is being jeopardised in the ongoing drive for industrial development at James Price Point,” Senator Siewert said today.

“This area contains the fossilised footprints of some of the largest dinosaurs to have walked the Earth and provides us with evidence of a diverse range of ancient habitats.

“One of the footprints in the area are as wide as 1.92m, which I understand is the largest that has been recorded. It is just staggering.

“As a result of isolation, climate and a lack of human interference, this remains an incredibly rare and valuable scientific area. But the proposed development of the Browse LNG processing hub, which intersects this coastline, will destroy the pristine nature of this important area.

“This is one of the only places in the world where dinosaur remnants form part of the traditional peoples' cultural story.

“Such a unique cultural and scientific area should not be jeapordised in the search for short term economic benefits when alternative sites exist,” Senator Siewert concluded.
