Greens serious about solutions to Bass Strait Freight

Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson has welcomed the statement from the Metropolitan Councils Group (MCG) on Bass Strait being incorporated into the National Highway.

"I note that MCG have called on the Australian Government to give this matter urgent and comprehensive consideration - this is exactly what the Australian Greens are doing through the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO)," Senator Whish-Wilson said.

"We have submitted a detailed proposal and are in discussion with the PBO so they can provide a comprehensive worked up costing of the required expenditure to incorporate Bass Strait into the National Highway network.

"This is an important first step prior to exploring legislative options to enact such a scheme.

"The Greens are serious about sustainable long-term solutions to the high costs associated with Bass Strait Freight.

"It's to be hoped any alternative proposals by other parties on this issue will also be independently costed by the PBO.

"Costing for a complex policy such as this is exactly why the Greens pushed for a PBO in their negotiations with the Government in 2010," Senator Whish-Wilson said.
