Long way to go in pokies fight: Greens

Media Release
Richard Di Natale 18 Jan 2012

Greens’ spokesperson for gambling, Senator Richard Di Natale, said that there was still a long way to go in the fight for meaningful pokies reform.

“The Government’s credibility is on the line if it dodges this important opportunity for reform,” said Senator Di Natale.

“It should get behind the Greens’ $1 bets proposal because it’s the cheapest, simplest and most effective reform with the best chance of passing the parliament.

“But if mandatory pre-commitment remains the government’s preferred option, the Greens will support it.

“The government should also put an end to speculation that it will water down reform by immediately ruling out voluntary pre-commitment or any trial that will delay meaningful pokies reform.

“The biggest opponents of pokies reform, namely  Clubs Australia and the Coalition, shouldn’t be popping the champagne corks just yet.

“At this stage it’s just speculation and there’s still a long way to go in this fight.”
