AG Brandis credibility on the line over seized legal advice to East Timor

Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne says the Attorney General must guarantee that privileged legal advice to the East Timor Government regarding proceedings against the Australian Government in The Hague that was seized by ASIO has not been provided to or used in any way by Australia's legal team.

"Australia's spies have seized privileged legal advice given to East Timor. Was the seizure in part to assist Australia in international legal action against us in The Hague? If not, why hasn't it been returned?" Senator Milne said.

NDIS cost cutting risks accessibility, services and productivity

The Australian Greens said today that any Government attempt to scale back the NDIS to save money would go against the spirit of the scheme and harm Australia's productivity.

"The Government has lined up the NDIS as part of its cost-cutting regime. Cutting costs will impact on services and the availability of the scheme to people with disability, meaning some will miss out," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on disability issues said.

Coalition sends a coded message on the future of the NDIS

The Australian Greens said today that the Coalition flagging a so-called ‘scaling back' of DisabilityCare Australia and a potential shift of responsibilities over to Medibank is code for winding back the NDIS.

Tony Abbott's government must not cave into pressure from the miners to defund legal rights groups, say the Australian Greens.

Australian Greens spokesperson for legal affairs Senator Penny Wright has written to Attorney General George Brandis urging him to resist calls from the mining lobby to defund the Environmental Defender's Office.

"The Environmental Defenders Office is the only thing standing between state governments and a rubber stamp for mining approvals," Senator Wright said.

Greens use Senate Estimates to bust the Premier’s NDIS myths

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today’s Senate Estimates have exposed the reality behind some myths being used against the rollout of DisabilityCare in WA.

“A number of the myths being used by Colin Barnett and his ministerial colleagues to undermine the NDIS in WA have been debunked,” Senator Siewert said today.

“It was clear from today’s Senate Estimates hearings with the Department of FaHCSIA that people currently receiving disability support services in WA will not go backwards under DisabilityCare.

The Australian Greens have welcomed the announcement of the First Peoples Disability Network Australia ten point plan for the implementation of the NDIS in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

"This ten point plan will help ensure that the NDIS supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders effectively. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders face many barriers to accessing adequate disability services."
