Coalition scrapping safe rates is bad news for NSW truckies

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon and Greens candidate for New England Mercurius Goldstein have commented on the scrapping of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal.  

“The Greens support the work of the Transport Workers Union to improve the wages and conditions for truck drivers. We strongly back the retention of the Road Safety Remuneration tribunal,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“For truck drivers to be safe at work they need safe rates. It is as simple as that.

"A floor price is a critical protection for truck drivers, their families and the travelling public.

Bondi Pavilion under threat as Liberal Mayor, Turnbull staffer opens door to developers

Waverley Liberal Mayor Sally Betts is under fire from the community for her Party's plans for Bondi Pavilion that would commercialise this unique building leading to privatisation by stealth, Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

Waverley Council is proposing a major upgrade for Bondi Pavilion. These plans will be considered at the Council's Tuesday night's meeting. 

“Developers would love to get their hands on Bondi Pavilion," Senator Rhiannon said.

Turnbull govt more interested in protecting their budget than public health - strongest condemnation over response to Williamtown Inquiry

The Greens have strongly backed community condemnation of the Turnbull government’s response to the Senate inquiry into groundwater contamination at Williamtown labelling it insulting and offensive.

"The Liberals and Nationals have hit a new low with how they are treating Williamtown residents," Senator Rhiannon said.

"The Department of Defence have admitted total responsibility for the toxic contamination of water and soil around their Williamtown RAAF base and they won't even pay for blood tests for locals.

The Greens are calling on Illawarra Labor MPs to give their full public support to the growing campaign for federal and state governments to back government procurement of Australian-made steel.

Greens Cunningham candidate Cath Blakey said, "Requiring government procurement is a survival plan for our steel industry that all progressive MPs and candidates should support.

"This issue is critical to future jobs growth and the local economy in the Illawarra.

"Labor MPs are under the spotlight on the future of steel jobs.

Shorten must rule out Labor-Liberal preference deal

Greens MP Adam Bandt has called on Bill Shorten to rule out preferencing the Liberals ahead of the Greens at the upcoming election.

Mr Bandt said the Labor leader must overrule Labor MP Michael Danby, who told Sky News today that he will preference the Liberals in his seat of Melbourne Ports and has called on Labor to preference the Liberals ahead of the Greens in all seats.

“Labor voters would be appalled to know that Labor preferences are going to the Liberals ahead of the Greens,” Mr Bandt said.

Malabar Headland – Veolia dumping highlights growing concern that federal handover weakens protection

The Greens have warned that when the Turnbull government finally handed over Malabar Headland to NSW in February and it was declared a national park, the Environment Minister Greg Hunt failed to lock in full protection for the site.

Greens candidate for Kingsford Smith James Macdonald and Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, a resident of the Eastern Suburbs, are working together to ensure full public access and to stop the dumping of polluting materials.
