Leigh Creek UCG project must be stopped

The Australian Greens are calling on urgent Federal Government intervention into the Leigh Creek Energy underground coal gasification project, after today’s announcement the company has produced its first syngas.

“The Federal Environment Minister must intervene and put a stop to this project before any irreversible damage is caused. It is a disgrace it was ever given the go-ahead by the South Australian Liberal Government,” Greens environment spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Labor should pull support for Shell and Arrow CSG Development deal

Shell and Arrow Energy have struck a deal without intervention from the Queensland government to push forward with the biggest coal seam gas development on the east coast.

Queensland Greens Senator Andrew Bartlett said:

“The deal between Shell and Arrow Energy when combined have given tens of thousands of dollars to the Labor Party is yet another example of the corporate stranglehold over politics Queenslanders are sick of."

“Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk should pull Labor’s support for this project."

CSG fugitive emissions: government must urgently fix shoddy under-counting of pollution

Responding to a damning new report from the Melbourne Energy Institute showing that the CSG industry has drastically under-estimated dangerous methane pollution from ‘fugitive’ emissions.  Information from Senate Estimates last week shows that the government has not funded crucial further research.

Bank decision shows coal seam gas destroys property values

Commenting on reports that CommBank has refused to accept a property with CSG wells on as security for a bridging loan, Acting Greens Leader and Mining & Resources spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said:

“We’ve known all along that fracking and CSG risks our land, water and the climate – now a major bank is admitting it also risks property values.

“This is the smoking gun the industry has been trying to deny for years – that CSG destroys property values.

Federal Greens bill to use constitution to give farmers, native title holders and local councils right to say no to coal and gas

The Australian Greens will introduce a bill to the federal Parliament today that exercises constitutional powers to give landholders nationally the right to say no to coal and gas mining on their land.

“It’s a disgrace that landholders still do not have any legal rights to protect their land, water and the climate from coal and gas when the big mining companies come knocking,”  Queensland Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens mining spokesperson, said.

Greens congratulate Douglas Shire on CSG ban

The Australian Greens congratulate the Douglas Shire Council for becoming a Lock the Gate supportive shire and opposing coal seam gas.  

“This is wonderful news. It’s excellent to see a local council in Queensland taking leadership to protect their community’s land, water and climate from the big mining companies,” Queensland Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

“For such an incredibly biodiverse, unique area, which attracts so much tourism, coal seam gas would be disastrous for Douglas Shire.
