"Kevin Rudd's $100 million plan is a mixed bag for Tasmania," Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"There is no way federal dollars should be propping up Ta Ann. Tasmania's brand of clean, green and clever needs to be boosted, not undermined.

"Tasmania needs new industries that build on our environment and our global reputation.

"Tasmanians have been waiting for the hundred million dollars from the intergovernmental agreement to boost regional jobs and new industries. But this money was always contingent upon protection of the forests.

Australia's first comprehensive analysis of Tasmania's entire forest carbon storage capacity, launched today by Tasmanian Greens Minister for Climate Change Cassy O'Connor, shows that our forests are worth more standing up than logged.

The new research shows that as a baseline, Tasmania's forests could hold between 3 and 4.4 billion tonnes of C02 equivalent, and reducing the timber harvesting rates would significantly increase the rate of carbon sequestration.

Parliament today rejected Rob Oakeshott's motion to disallow regulations on renewable energy that form a key part of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee's agreement from last July.

The regulations, which Mr Oakeshott sought to disallow but which are now law, ensure that native forest furnaces cannot be counted as producing renewable energy - a major win for the climate and for protection of forests and wildlife habitat.

The government agreement to stop logging in Tasmania's wild forests is clear: logging must stop in the 430,000ha that the Prime Minister and Premier said would be protected, Australian Greens Deputy Leader Christine Milne said today.

"We've heard that Forestry Tasmania cannot move its logging out of the area. The next step is to issue compensation to those contract holders as the agreement clearly states," Senator Milne said.
