Dutton shifts his prisoners between islands

Peter Dutton trying to move his Manus Island prisoners to Nauru is a cruel and unfair move which reeks of panic and desperation, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“The men on Manus Island have suffered long enough, yet Dutton wants to take them out of one frying pan and straight into another one,” Senator McKim said.

“Amnesty International says the conditions in Dutton’s Nauru prison amount to torture – it is clearly not a suitable place for people seeking asylum.”

Death on Manus Island

The death of a sixth man on Manus Island is another indictment on the Labor and Liberal policy of deliberately harming people on Manus and Nauru, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“This is a case of catastrophic neglect by Peter Dutton,” Senator McKim said.

“The policy of deliberately harming people seeking asylum– which is shared by the Labor and Liberal parties - appears to have taken yet another life.”

“This man had suffered for years in a system that Australia’s Labor and Liberal parties deliberately designed and operated to cause mental harm.”

Manus settlement can’t compensate for Dutton’s harm

No amount of money can compensate for the harm that has been done and is still being done to Australia’s political prisoners on Manus Island, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

“This is the largest human rights settlement in Australian history, but it is a pittance compared to the horrors inflicted on these men by the Labor and Liberal parties,” Senator McKim said.

“They have suffered horrendously and lost years of their lives. No amount of money can ever compensate for that.”

Manus Island death at Dutton's feet

The death of a man on Manus Island represents an abhorrent failure by Peter Dutton and Malcolm Turnbull, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"This death can be laid squarely at the feet of the man who should have looked after him - Peter Dutton," Senator McKim said.

"This man repeatedly sought Australia's help. The Liberals ignored his pleas and now must bear responsibility for what happened."

Dutton accepts responsibility for Manus Island harm

Settlement in the Manus Island class action is an admission by Peter Dutton that he is responsible for the illegal detention and deliberate harm of people seeking asylum in Australia, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"These 1900 men who sought safety in Australia have lost their freedoms, their families and their futures because of Peter Dutton's decisions," Senator McKim said.

"No amount of money can compensate for this."

Manus documents show torture is government policy

Documents showing a plan to make conditions worse for people in Australia's Manus Island detention centre are proof that the torture of innocent people seeking asylum is Australian government policy.

"Punishing people and subjecting them to degradation to coerce an outcome fits squarely within the definition of torture," Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim said.

"The Australian government, and the private contractors it has employed, are in clear breach of their legal and moral obligations."

Dutton and Turnbull abandon the men of Manus Island

The Australian government is preparing to completely wash its hands of the men it has detained for four years on Manus Island.

"After four years of hell overseen by the Australian government, these men have now have to make an impossible choice," Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim said.

"The walls of the detention centre were the only thing between asylum seekers and heavy gunfire last month – now Peter Dutton wants to knock down the walls."

Manus Island report reveals Dutton's neglect and lies

Amnesty International's report on the Manus Island shooting and concessions from PNG police have made clear Peter Dutton's catastrophic failure to keep people safe as well as his disgraceful dishonesty.

"The report and PNG police have made it clear that bullets were fired upon the detention centre, contrary to Dutton's claims," Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim said.

"People in his care are being shot at and he has not lifted a finger to keep them safe. This is an appalling act of neglect."

Manus Island Detention Centre ban

Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says the decision to bar him from visiting Australia's Manus Island detention centre continues the disgraceful secrecy of the Australian government's policies.

"This is a deeply disappointing decision that shows the utter determination to keep a veil of secrecy around Australia’s detention centres and the Good Friday attacks," Senator McKim said.

"People are being warehoused as far from scrutiny as the Australian government can hide them."

"It would not surprise if Peter Dutton has his fingerprints on the decision."

Manus Island and Nauru Senate Inquiry

Evidence presented to the Senate inquiry into the conditions on Manus Island and Nauru should prompt the immediate closure of both offshore detention centres, Greens Immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says.

"Australia’s centres on Manus Island and Nauru are inhumane, non-compliant with international obligations, and should immediately be closed and all detainees brought to Australia," Senator McKim said.
